The Sheffield Microarray and Next Generation Sequencing Core Facility

The facility has several years experience as an Affymetrix accredited laboratory to house and run an Affymetrix Gene Chip Microarray system.  It has recently extended capacity to include an Illumina HiScan SQ system for sequencing by synthesis (NGS) and further microarray facility.

The unit offers full technical support, according to standard protocols, in the preparation and running of your samples for next generation sequencing or microarray analysis. Sequencing by synthesis can be used for DNA or RNA and methods are available to examine whole genomes, exomes or specific regions isolated by antibody or bait technologies. A number of different commercial arrays are available to look at areas such as gene expression, exon or whole transcriptome analysis, SNP analysis, or methylation analysis. Arrays are available for many different organisms.


Principal equipment in the facility

  • Agilent 2100 bioanalyser to examine RNA integrity and concentration.
  • Affymetrix Gene Chip hybridisation system.
  • Nanodrop spectrophotometer.
  • Illumina HiScan SQ

Whilst we do not currently offer full Bioinformatic support we can offer access to and training in preliminary data analysis of the data produced in a microarray or NGS experiment.
